Adivasi Upliftment

The first project of DRAG was in a tribal pocket of Maharashtra. In 1988 DRAG ventured among the Katkari and Thakkars of Pen taluka of Raigad district as they were not able to secure one square meal a day. The strategy was to enable them to take advantage of the government`s anti- poverty programmes designed for them.

DRAG spent five years among the tribals. And during this entire time its focus was on what Paulo Freire has termed as "conscientisation'. That is not only making them aware of their rights but also informing them of the poverty alleviation schemes, and how they could secure business and other benefits through them.

Hence they would not continue to starve, remain emaciated , and produce underfed, undernourished and often deformed children many of whom perished in childhood.
